Bristol Beer Factory - Southville Hop 6.5%

Taste: This one's taking me back to the palm fringed shores of Maui. These's an overwhelming sense that there's a hell of a lot of US hops in here, but that's not all this beer is about (But it IS mainly about Hops). My goodness. Delicious!

Appearance: Cloudy fish tank. (This may have been disturbed in the car).

Would you buy 2? I'm beginning to wish that I had.

Would you buy 4? Yes.

Rating (out of 7): 6****** This is my first beer from Bristol Beer Factory, and I'm enjoying what they are doing very much. Kudos.

St. Peter's - Cream Stout 6.5%

Taste: This has an unusual grassy taste, which must be coming from the dual hops. After handling baby milk as much as I do, I can really taste the flavour from the lactose sugars in this or am I imagining things? Either way, this is a pretty nice stout. It's sweet and malty and its taking away my back pain, what more could you want?

Appearance: Vimto black. Standard, lovely St. Peter's Bottle.

Would you buy 2? I think I'd take two of these.

Would you buy 4? On draught, who knows? ... Do St. Peter's keg their beer?

Rating (out of 7): 5***** a good effort!

Sunny Republic - Dolphin Amber 4.2%

Taste: Fresh from the brewery. This is really light. Tasty biscuity malt. And a touch of fruit, maybe. Really drinkable.

Appearance: Copper red or foxes. Apparently based on an old Poole Brewery recipe from 1920. Psychedelic dolphin label.

Would you buy 2? I'd love to.

Would you buy 4? Yes please.

Rating (out of 7): 5***** lovely!

St. Peter's - The Saint's Whiskey Beer 4.8%

Taste: infused with a shot of whiskey..... We're getting mixed reviews. TCP. Disinfectant. Described from medicinal to burnt. There's a particular whiskey it tastes like... Apparently ..... DETOL!!!! Cleanses your insides but not your soul.

Appearance: Beer with a cigarette overnight / whiskey.

Would you buy 2? I don't think so.

Would you buy 4? No. Good idea. But whiskey barrel ale works better.

Rating (out of 7): it's gone from medicinal to cigarettes. It gets the blogs first -7 from Jean the Belguim. About 2 from everyone else.

Palmers - Tally Ho! 5.5%

Taste: A sweetly, strong molasses-whip. I'm getting raisin-like fruit and nutty malts. Very nice. It goes down smooth.

Would you buy 4? I wish.

Rating (out of 7): 6******

Would you buy 4? I could probably drink four of these, but the selection here is just too amazing to sit on this.

Rating (out of 7): 5***** very nice

Marston's - Mann Brown Ale 2.8%

Taste: like homebrew from the 80's. An unpleasant yeasty, malt-slap. Not reccomended.

Appearance: brewed since 1902?! Time to make a change. It's one of those ale's you'd never buy. But someone's got to review them.

Would you buy 2? Never again.

Would you buy 4? I'm not a fan.

Rating (out of 7): 2 because I haven't decided if I'll tip it away yet. 1 stars are an instant pour down the sink.

Update... I had to pour it away....

Celt - Scrum Pox (4.6%)

Taste: Smooth, Tasteless, Harsh, Bitter, Heavy, Fruity... aaargh - too many sensations. A bit overwhelming. Hmmm, not the best after taste.

Appearance: Golden brown texture like sun

Would you buy 2? Possible, but it would be hard work.

Would you buy 4? A mission too far.

Rating (out of 7): 3

Celt - Silures 4.6%

Taste: Oooh, the bottle smells a bit feety. Tastes like shells from the seaside but it's a little too chemically. One reviewer is a big fan of the Celt brand, but they agree this is bad news.

Appearance: Spanish leather.

Would you buy 2? No, there are other Celt ales.

Would you buy 4? No chance.

Rating (out of 7): 2 * * . A let down.

Miws Piws - X Mws Llawen 5%

Taste: A  big malty wooomph at first which is good, but then I'm looking for a killer aftertaste to take the 6 star rating. Unfortuantely it doesn't come, just a slight floor polish vibe. Oh well.

Appearance: Night

Would you buy 2? Is it christmas? If it is, yes!

Would you buy 4? Hang on it's 10 months to Christmas. Comeback then.

Rating (out of 7): 4 * * * * . A belated Christmas ale.

Cych Valley - Samantha Fox

Taste: Watery volcanic apples and melted chocolate. A touch too watery.

Appearance: the ale is apple juice like. The pump art is beyond description...

Would you buy 2? In the summer.

Would you buy 4? Not so likely.

Rating (out of 7): 3 * * *

Brecon Brewing - Gold Beacons 4.2%

Taste: Like dragging your tongue through a forest. This ia a harsh wildereness ale. There's a funny aftertaste, which turns out to be... grapefruit.

Appearance: Golden syrup

Would you buy 2: Perhaps

Would you buy 4? Perhaps not

Rating (out of 7): 4 * * * *

Miws Piws - Myrica Gale 4.1%

Taste: After an ale absence, this is a welcome return to the brown train. Smokey, a touch gingery but not too over powered.  The ale equivalent of camping in the North Wales mountains. I guess it's a case of right place, right time for this ale and it is right now!

Appearance: Like gazing into deep space.

Would you buy 2? I would gladly pack two in a rucksack.

Would you buy 4? After a long walk, I would take on four.

Rating (out of 7): 5 * * * * *. A cold weather ale, but a good one!

Cliff Quay Brewery - Bitter 3.4%

Taste: A beer so smooth you could drink it for breakfast. A really light, bitter with some tasty citrus hops going on in there somewhere.

Appearance: Clear amber dream. An informative pump clip.

Would you buy 2? I would!

Would you buy 4? I think I could drink about 10 of these in a sunny beer garden.

Rating (out of 7): 6****** perfect session stuff.

Ridgeway Brewing - Bad King John 6%

Taste: this was the winner of Sainsbury's great British beer hunt a year or so ago. While the Williams brothers beer should have won. This was a strong runner up (out of the competition). It's a strong black ale. Malty, but it doesn't pack enough flavour for its 6% strength. I could do with something a bit more exciting here.

Appearance: Dark with a white ring floating on top. Crude knight drawings on bottle.

Would you buy 2? I have done.

Would you buy 4? I have, it's a good choice if all you have is Sainsbury's for ale.

Rating (out of 7): 5***** above average. Very gulpable.

Ska Brewing Co. - Steel Toe Stout (Working Class Milk Stout) 5.4%

Taste: A delicious sweet stout. Malty taste with the aroma of Christmas Cake. Raisin spectre,

Appearance: dark with glimmers of light. Ska bottle.

Would you buy 2? I'd like two, very much.

Would you buy 4? Yes please! At only 5.4% with this much flavour. This could be a go-to stout.

Rating (out of 7): 6****** congratulations. This is nice.

Arbor Ales - Brigstow Bitter 4.3%

Taste: A well hopped bitter. Crystal malts and Challenger hops (amongst others). Tastes pretty good to me. Not the most exciting flavour, but it is smooth. It has a bit of a homebrew yeast-edge. But I can deal with that.

Appearance: cloudy orange.

Would you buy 2? I could do two.

Would you buy 4? I am uncertain.

Rating (out of 7): 4**** it's not up there with their most delicious ales.

Rating (out of 7): 4 - a bit short of the number of beacons

Monday, February 4, 2013

Arbor Ales - Colab 1B 7.4%

Would you buy 4? I might be hard pushed. It's good though, make no mistake. I've had a lot of six starrers of late.

Rating (out of 7): 5***** not quite a six, but a worth addition to your stomach.

Arbor Ales - Down Deeper, Black Barley Wine 12%

Taste: Sweet booze warmth rises from this. It's force is unstoppable. It's like a mix if port and sherry with some porter spilled on the top. Lovely.

Appearance: totally rad deep sea artwork. Totally black beer.

Would you buy 2? I would.

Would you buy 4? Yes. I'd spread out the drinking though, on account of liver failure.

Rating (out of 7): 6****** exciting brewing.

Mikkeller - Hop Bomb Challenge 2011 6.3%

Taste: Wild!!! Tastes like scrumping at a hop farm.... Rubbing your body with the oily hop flowers. Yet, the taste is pretty well rounded and mellow. Buttery almost. A magic brew.

Would you buy 2? I'd love to. I think swiped the last one?

Would you buy 4? Of course

Rating (out of 7): 6****** I'm excited about drinking the rest of this.

The Kernel Brewery - London Brewer's Alliance Collaboration London Stout 6.8%

Taste: Woah, that's a powerful taste. Smokey bacon aroma and a powerful malt-lick. A power-stout and weighing in at only 6.8%. I'm sure there's some kind of liquor aftertaste. Whiskey?.... Crackling?

Appearance: Crude oil.

Would you buy 2? I'd love to.

Would you buy 4? Is there any left??

Rating (out of 7): 6****** a progressive stout.

J.W. Lees - Manchester Star Ale 7.3%

Taste: Thick, sweet molasses. Selsig Blasus. Darkness engulfs me. Chocolate, malt and alcoholic sweetness are laying me down and putting coins in my eyes.

Appearance: Calypso Coffee Black.

Would you buy 2? Yes I would.

Would you buy 4? I'd buy 4. I might not drink them all in one sitting though.

Rating (out of 7): 5***** right up my ale alley. But not a six.

Tap Room Brewing Company - American Pale Ale 5.3%

Taste: Smell is promising. Sweet and well hopped. The taste is pretty good. It has a nice mouthfeel, with a good head. Bitterish taste with the hops not as upfront as some US Pale Ales. Good for a 'brewed for Sainsbury's' beer.

Appearance: Amber Fizz.

Would you buy 2? I think I might.

Would you buy 4? I could!

Rating (out of 7): 5*****
